the old belt size issue again

Postby 38racing » Mon Jan 20, 2020 5:23 pm

I just broke another belt on my mtd 621 snowblower on my riding mower. Doing some research I found a MTD 2000 technical guide which had info on that blower. Turns out they changed from belt 754-3039 1/2 x 103 to 754-0455 1/2 x 102. So if you look up 0455 everywhere says it's 103" including mtdparts.ca. I called MTD technical support and she's confused by it too. She wasn't around in 2000. Going to try a kevlar 102 and hope it works better.

Geez. I ordered a 1/2 by 102 belt and just tried to put it on. Too short! Ran it down the stair rail and it comes in at 101.25. So I pulled the 103 that I had here already and guess what? It's actually 1 inch longer than the 102 at 102.25. Theoretically that should be good So I guess I'll try it and see how long it lasts. Technically it should be the same as the one that broke but who know how long it was. Maybe I'll check the break point and see if I can measure what size it was when it busted. Pain the b... as I have to loosen front idler pulleys to get the belt off/on.

Now you see what I went through last year which ended up costing me nearly 1000 usd as all I could do was throw them away.

Where the 1/2 belt inch or more short it was the 5/8 being 2" or more that real pissed me off. So much that I quit the aftermarket distributor that I had done business with for 9 yrs.
