Spindle assembly for old Murray 38 inch cut

Postby jerkputter123 » Mon Apr 13, 2020 1:32 pm

I have an old Murray riding mower. Model number 38618x92a
I just use it to cut about 1/2 acre at my shop. It still runs great . I bought it new in 1991 and has been well maintained, garage kept. One of the deck spindles is broke. I have looked and so far no help on locating the complete spindle jackshaft assembly. Any suggestion where I could purchase two of these parts ? I can still sometimes find blades just not these spindles .

If the spindle shafts are not bent then you would need 492574MA. The spindle shaft is PN 491922MA. The spindle shaft is the OD 5/8", Length7 3/4", 1 1/4" OD shoulder, .600" OD spline.

If you Google the 492574MA part number it will give you several aftermarket referrals.

They may be bent. I have not removed it yet as I am still able to cut with it right now. Last year I hired a man to cut the grass and he hit something after about 10 minutes so I told him I wouldn't need him anymore. I looked and it cracked the housing . The bearing is just rough now so I thought I would just replace both this year if I could find them. I will look close to make sure the shaft is not bent.
Thanks a million. This helps a lot. I just got to decide if this mower is worth it. The pulley on top of differential is worn and wobbles but it has been this way for years. Actually thought of just welding it where it goes on the shaft.
I never put it in reverse and the belt will stay on it. Most would have already scrapped this mower but I try and get all I can out of something. :D :D

If they were bent I would think you would noticed a bad cut. Now when I was seeing a lot of these Murrays those 5/8" shaft were prone to bending when they impacted something solid.
