All this monkey business about TDC on compression stroke can be avoided by rolling the engine over until either one of the valves is depressed by the rocker arm. When it is, adjust the other valve's clearance. Then roll the engine over until the valve you just adjusted is depressed and then set the other valve's clearance. All done and it doesn't take a bit longer to do and there's no doubt you have set the valves correctly. End of story. Why make it more complicated than it has to be? ;)

I agree NO0C. That is why I went back to the old way myself, just didn't need to overtax my poppy seed sized brain.

Valves were way out of adjustment! Both about .020. Tractor starts fine now. Thanks to all that steered me in the right direction!
