Older Briggs on Homelite generator

Postby Dale_W » Thu May 26, 2022 12:32 pm

Hi All

model 130232
type 0534-01
code 77111707

Engine won't fire even with a shot of starter fluid. Turns out there is no spark, even with a few different plugs.

Here is the odd (to me) part. When I give the rope a pull, and hold onto plug, it does give me a zap. Just not enough I guess to jump a spark plug.

Time for new points and condenser?

Thanks,

Dale

The coil for that been superseded to Magnetron coil kit PN 397358. This replaces the points and condenser set and the old coil.

The 294628 points/condenser are still available but why bother, the replacement coil is far easier and will outlast the unit.

I run into this situation on most of the old 1960s-1970s Briggs engines I restore and I agree 100% with the previous replies- why horse around with points and condenser when conversion to electronic ("Magnetron") is so easy and PERMANENT? I am assuming that you already know that you do not have to pull the flywheel and disconnect or remove the points and condenser? All you have to due is clip the wires off that went to the old coil.

someone just left an old tiller with 3 hp . 1977 I think. hopefully a new coil is available. hopefully someone was just testing for spark. New plug was hanging from coil wire and plug was for an OHV. Friend's neighbour just took homedepot advise on plug for his toro personal pace. I guess they gave him an OHV plug for a briggs quantum flat head. won't start now. I just did quick check and it had resistance on pull but no fire . It's the auto choke version. Anyway I checked and oil was way over full but not actually gassy. So maybe oil wet plug. I'm going back to suck out some oil and put a br2-lm in it. They have the old back in and it was br4-lm.

If that is a Briggs engine, yes the Magnetron coil is still available. Use Briggs part # 591420 for your search.
