Generac GP8000E generator problem

Postby samcarpen » Fri May 27, 2022 10:53 am

Model number 006931R0
If I try to load it up to 7800 watts the engine bogs down, volts fall to under 110 and hertz drop to under 50. Checked air filter and fuel flow. Adjusted valves, changed sparkplug and cleaned carburetor. Governor has the carburetor wide open. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?
Thanks, Sam

That seems normal. It will briefly provide full output for starting but 80% (6400W) is a more realistic goal. If you need that much continuous power a bigger machine is in order.

What rpm is it reaching and maintaining at full throttle?

According to the side panel, it's rated 10000w surge and 8000w running. 62 hertz, 123v at 3700 rpm at no load.

I am not asking what rpm it is "rated" at. I am asking what RPM is it actually attaining/reaching at full throttle when it is running.

Have no idea what the rated rpm is. Currently at no load it's running at 3700 rpm, 62 hertz and 123v as stated in my earlier post.
Thanks,

sounds about normal, if that load you are trying to apply is relatively continuous - the 8Kw rating is for SURGE wattage only - as in like starting up a fridge motor (when they start they draw high watts momentarily, but as they get running, the wattage draw goes down) As noted earlier, you need a bigger generator if your continuous load is that high.. probably at least a 10Kw.

According to the side panel, this unit is rated at 10000 surge and 8000 continuous.
Thanks

OK sounds like it may be running rich under load... simple things to check: how dirty is the carburetor on the outside? (Thinking the bowl vents and air bleeds) - Does it seep any fuel at all anywhere? (float needle not seating properly) - Carburetor may need cleaning (Blocked air bleeds, etc) - might also consider checking flywheel key (unlikely , but a slightly sheared key can bump ignition timing enough that it'd go rich under loads) does it have one of those "extra quiet" spark arrestor mufflers? (possible blocked spark arrestor screen) ... Try a new spark plug (especially if yours is a champion - they are prone to fouling and misfiring, in my experience - NOTE: NEW does NOT mean GOOD! ) do a leakdown test and look for possible valve leak (and/or sticking valves is another possibility, leakdown may not show that though..) thats a few things I can think of you might wanna check on... (when the bogging down happens, look close at exhaust if it looks like dark blue-black smoke, it is running rich for sure.. so, carb or a misfire, or timing's off)

Edit: on the other hand, when the problem does happen, try and squirt a shot of extra fuel (or carb cleaner) into the carb throat (air cleaner off) , if it improves, then it may be too LEAN, under load (or an air leak after the carb - gaskets, etc)
