Everyone has their own way of doing things. Your way works too but I just use by what is the Briggs L-head service manual.
Rotate crankshaft in direction of operation until piston is at top dead center of compression stroke.

Then lock the crankshaft in that position.
The truest measure of society is the how it treats its elderly, its pets, and its prisoners.

In case you don't want to make your own tools - my leak down tester and my compression tester come from OTC Tools. I learned that OTC makes these for Snap On and other high priced brands.

They also make these tools available with the OTC label for a lot less money. If it's good enough for Snap-On and I can get it for less, I'm in!

I couldn't care less about having expensive name brand tools.
