Stihl bg 85 losing power after warm up

Postby Sdc618 » Fri May 29, 2015 7:32 pm

Working on a stihl bg 85. Complaint that it's losing power after running strong for several minutes. Carb cleaned all parts in good shape. Replaced tank vent and fuel filter. Fuel lines in good shape. Spark arrestor clear. Any other ideas? Appreciate any help!

Have you readjusted the high speed screw after it is good and warm?

Air filter condition?

Good thought could be running a little too rich once warmed up.

Also check carburetor adapter (spacer, heat dam, intake manifold are names for the same part) that tight and not damaged. Had an Echo Hedger earlier this year that ran good until warm and it was just that the adapter screws were loose. Check the cylinder to crankcase screws while your at it. If loose suspect a damaged cylinder gasket or crankcase sealer.

One thing to remember is that the entire crankcase is part of the intake system on two cycles so it must be air tight.

While losing power after warm up in 2 strokes is usually caused by carburetion and/or fuel delivery problems, it can also be caused by overheating. A faulty or stale fuel mix can be a cause. Non ethanol pre-mixes are a good troubleshooting fuel for 2 strokes, and for infrequently used equipment, can be a cost effective alternative to mixing your own fuel. MH

Just curious, did you ever find out what the problem was with the blower?

Don't know as the user only logged a couple times and the last time was Fri May 29, 2015 18:33 before anyone replied to the post; may have viewed as a visitor since then. I see this not updating posts a lot on various sites.

This just leaves things hanging as no one knows if it got resolved or not. It sure would be nice if posters would post a closing post along with solution(s) the problem as not only benefits them, it benefits us as we hone our online troubleshooting skills and our knowledge of the equipment.

I was hoping that maybe he/she would reply if they saw someone was inquiring...I figured it would be a long shot. Have a merry Christmas.
