Service Manual

Postby Walt 2002 » Thu Jun 25, 2015 6:12 pm

Is there a newer B&S Service Manual than #276781? I have a Model 33R777 to reassemble and am not sure the torque settings etc are current.

Thanks,

Not that I am aware of but there are couple new torque specs you should be aware of.

Cylinder bolts torque was change from 220 in-lb to 250 in-lbs.

And Flywheel torque specs has some changes as follows:

Prior to Datecode 120701
Increase torque to 110 ft lbs and use steel key PN 796335.

After Date code 120630 100ft-lbs and use aluminum key

Flywheel and crankshaft were redesigned after 120630 and are not interchangeable.

That causes grief when ordering short blocks.

So true.. so much so that we don't even bother with short blocks - if it is that bad it gets a whole new engine.

Thanks, I had heard about the torque settings and steel key. I thought perhaps there was a new edition of the manual after all there has been considerable change in the 28, 31 and 33 series since introduction.

Yeah - I don't think they update the manuals that often, the more recent changes are mostly posted to dealers via APSI or TSB (Advance Product Service Information or Technical Service Bulletin, for those wondering at the acronyms) - There's also a specific model (Cant recall offhand) which has the crankcase base gasket changed several times in the last 2 years and now the gasket comes as a kit with new bolts and a 300 inch pound torque specification.. none of which is any of the current service manuals I do not believe.

Walt - perhaps you might hook up with a Briggs dealer decent enough to set you up with a technician's account at the power portal.. Just a thought to keep in mind if you get friendly with one.. then you'd have access to the "latest greatest" service info..

The newer 40,44 & 49 series engines use an updated crankcase gasket with new bolts, torques to 300 in lbs

Yeah with an even more outrages price. I am looking at making my own, Our 407777 is leaking a little. I have the punches and a plan, just need to find the right stock.

BG, Thanks for the suggestion but I am not doing much and thinking of quitting completely.

PS: Got the 33 together, added a little to old settings, it starts and runs great and will have a new home tomorrow, thanks all.
