briggs 331977 binds at TDC compression stroke

Postby KeithA » Wed Aug 05, 2015 9:46 pm

Hello friends.
Life has a way of getting in the way of surfing the board.
Wife finally after 5 yrs got her femur to heal. (car accident 9/30/09).

Well I have a 26 month old BS 331977 0010g1.
Customer calls, it went BANG and turns over but wont start.
Found sheared flywheel key and a cracked flywheel by the key way.
Replaced flywheel and key checked and adjusted valves Int .0.003" exh. 0.005"
New battery 12.5 volts.
Binds at TDCC. if I finesse it I can get it past and it starts.
Several local folks Ive talked with haven't seen issues with these.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Keith

check your push rods, check compression (valve seat or valve guide come loose?) would be the first things I would check - could have jumped time if the cam sheared or crank gear sheared - the binding is probably the cause of the bang and sheared flywheel - But - if you havent already (I assume you replaced flywheel) check for loose magnets in the flywheel hanging on the alternator... it being at TDC it could also be binding on the armature (check flywheel and coil air gap?)

Also check for a bad decompressor on the camshaft. The 793880 cam compressor seems to be failure point with it breaking and pieces going flying at first and then settling to bottom of the oil pan.

I had a 310000 earlier that uses the same cam that would make to TDC and stop. I could just barely get past TDC by hand turning due the high compression it was caused by the cam failure.

Also make sure you torque the flywheel bolt to 110 ft-lbs.
