Deck Bolts push Lawnmower

Postby rrrhre2s » Wed Sep 09, 2015 8:22 am

Need to remove the bolts from a Briggs engine attached to a rotted out deck.
Trying to save the engine for a newer mower with a bent crank and busted sump.
Unlike the older bolts with 9/16" heads these had 1/2" heads which have rusted away.
This engine and deck was only 3 years old looks like the underneath of the deck has been dipped in acid, nothing but rust.
The engine ran fine before junking the deck. Cut motor from deck with a screwdriver.

It has been suggested to MIG weld a nut to what is left but I don't have a welder.
I don't know except for the engine it's self if there is enough metal to get a good ground to weld anything.

Will probably junk both soon.

Any ideals ?

grind the hex down to 12mm or 7/16.. or borrow an automotive stud remover tool and grind down head of bolt to fit.. with any luck they wont twist off in whih case you'll have to drill 'em out.

They also make bolt extractors:

Sometimes you can hammer an old socket over it. Like BGS said, a metric.
Heat it real good too.

Cut em off with a disc and drill out....use nuts and bolts.

Them are your best bet. You also want to smack the heads with a hammer ( like driving a nail) to help loosen them up. Works sometimes.
That far gone though, they will probably wring off.

Right on as above!

1/4 or 5/16 bolts will do on a push mower. (get them tight and use threadlock or they will work loose)

like all of the above have said, cut it off, most everyone has a dremel tool or get an arbor and discs for an electric drill, takes some time with the drill but beats trying to "will" them out! :D
