Husqvarna 3120 Chain Saw Kicking Back

Postby Skywatcher » Tue Nov 24, 2015 9:07 pm

Greetings All

Customer brought in a 2002 Husqvarna 3120 118cc chain saw that had no spark. Tests determined ignition coil was dead. Ordered new coil P/N 5031385-01. New coil has 3 legs whereas old coil only had 2. Installed new coil and engine kicks back and rips the starter grip right out of ones hand even with de-compressor is set for starting. Fitted a snow blower mitten grip and ended up with blood blisters on my hand as the kick back is so severe. I feel the spark is hitting before the de-compressor port is closed off by the piston so de-compressor kicks out instantly and engine kicks back. Was able to pull the flywheel this afternoon to check the flywheel key, still OK and not sheared.

Has there been a change up with the ignition system on these units requiring a different flywheel? Also is the 3 legged coil one of these auto advance coils that is supposed to advance the spark at x rpm? If so, could it be trying to start at the advanced spark?

Any thoughts or advice more than welcome,

Sky

Hmm are you sure you got the right coil for the model year? Could have been a production change based on serial number.

Maybe also got coil on upside down?

Just a couple thoughts.

Sounds like you ordered a 503138501 coil instead of the EPA version 544018801(formerly 503901701). Edit: and yes there are two different flywheels.

Is that IPL missing the part number for the flywheel?

They are there in section "M". 522892002 (formerly 501895002) for the EPA 9,750 rpm limited coil version and the 522892001 (formerly 501895001) for the unlimited coil.

Here is copy of the service bulletin.

So to change over to unlimited rpm coil would also require changing the flywheel.

Hi KE4

Thank you for the very relevant information. I have contacted Dixie Sales and they don't even show this part in their system. They'll get back to me when they've done some research on getting this part added to their system. Local Husqvarna dealer wants over $160.00 for this coil, ouch!

USA place where I buy parts shows at about $107 USD but with our .75 CDN$ and $12 shipping and they charge us the HST so about to that same $160. When you say Dixie Sales are you buying from Ordertree? Whenever I go to their Canadian site it seems every part I have ever added to the shopping cart shows as backordered.

You could try Fleabay.

Dixie does not handle Husqvarna dealer parts - just Husqvarna Outdoor (Poulan, Weedeater, AYP) (Where parts interchange between a Poulan and a Husqvarna, they'll have the parts - because many of the low end Husqvarna badged items are just a cheap Poulan or Weedeater in orange paint, but where it is Husqvarna only, those come from Husqvarna's direct to dealer distribution channel)

Sky, if you access the Amazon there is one on there for $20.00 and free shipping. Don't about the Canadian pricing and shipping through.
