why 2 piece pulley?

Why did MTD use the 2 piece engine pulley with locking teeth on some tillers?

I know somethings just don't sense do they? Probably just to be pain in the backside for us in the field.

I got a customer the uses the Husqvarna 675HWT Trimmer. It has been sheared the drive pulley several because they are using a 2 piece pulley assembly that is of all things assembled together with aluminum rivets which are shearing.

Some of them are designed to be able to adjust them for width I believe (add or remove shims) and some are simply for ease of assembly on the production line.. Try to look at how they fit up and see if you would even be able to assemble a one-piece pulley to where it is installed, and that may answer the question... sometimes you might not have enough room to slide a pulley on or off - you'd end up having to pull the engine or something to install it..

- They also have 2-piece snowblower pulleys and then there's the "flat idler" that is basically just a ball bearing with a "shield" and just all held in place with a lock nut.

I do not really see any problems in the design of them to be honest - there ARE some like KE4 Mentions (not to mention wheel rims) that are problematic that way.

Hi 38

It's called cost of production. A half pulley can be formed from powdered metal in a molding press with a top die, bottom die and forming tube. A one piece pulley would require forming then machining to create the belt groove, extra steps, extra time and wasted material (cuttings from the groove). All the best,

A friend was having issues with belt slip. He saw silver stuff near front pulley. Possibly the teeth on pulley halves have sheared. Regular pulley will likely be cheaper replacement if that is the case based on OEM pricing for replacement parts.

Hi 38

If you can get the numbers off the tiller, I'll PM you with P/N & Canadian $ for OEM pulley. All the best,
