Carburetor Solenoid hookup

Postby dennis » Sat Feb 13, 2016 7:22 pm

I am working on a generator with a Honda engine. The engine is a GX240K1, VMT2, GC04-4713788. (Generator is MI-T-M Mod. GEN-4000-OMHO)

There is a solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor. The two wires from it were just coiled up and plugged into each other. This is a pull start engine with no electric start or battery. I am wondering what the two leads from the carb solenoid should be connected to? Thanks for any help.

I bet if you remove the solenoid you will find the tip of the plunger has been nipped off. Normally generator power would open the solenoid as soon as the unit is shut down it would close and keep the engine from after firing.

I have requested a wiring diagram from MI-T-M on the GEN-4000-OMHO to see what may be involved. I will need to wait on their response.

Noticed that someone added "U1" in red to the GX240. How did you determine that? The U1 is not stamped on the engine anywhere that I can see.

Type and serial numbers will bring that up when using Honda parts lookups

That reason type/spec and serial are just as important as the base model number.

And I actually got it wrong too as it is a K1 version (should had check the serial prefix) so I will correct that.

Here is a list the GX240 VMT2 versions:
  • GX240K1 VMT2 ENGINE, JPN, VIN# GC04-4400001 TO GC04-9999999
  • GX240R1 VMT2 ENGINE, JPN, VIN# GCAKK-1000001
  • GX240RT1 VMT2 ENGINE, THA, VIN# GCATT-1000001 TO GCATT-9999999
  • GX240RT2 VMT2 ENGINE, THA, VIN# GCBJT-1000001
  • GX240U1 VMT2 ENGINE, JPN, VIN# GCAKK-1000001

Got back the reply. The wiring diagram very basic and only cover the generator side; nothing engine related. Personally I would have liked to see better version with wire color codes.

You will find this a common practice. The solenoid is for idle down only and is not being used in your application. This solenoid requires power to close, not open. The generator it is on doesn't have an idle down circuit thus the two wires are hooked together.
