Briggs 120402-0109E1 carb problems

Postby dart451 » Sat Apr 02, 2016 3:21 pm

I put this new carb ( 591925) on customers tiller last year. He broke a pull rope at the end of last season, let it sit all winter...carb smelled of varnish. It will run on 3/4 choke but surges like hell at full. I removed carb, cleaned in my ultrasonic cleaner, still does the same thing. It still seems to be starving for gas. I even used a temporary fuel tank to rule out tank/fuel problems...same surging. The only thing I can think to do is try the cleaning again...carb looked clean inside...maybe run some welding cleaning wire through the orfices? Any other suggestions?

Takes us a while sometimes; just put in 8 hrs repairing a UTV.

Try cleaning the fuel bowl bolt/jet. A wax like substance may be coating the surfaces and an ultrasonic cleaners will usually not get that out; unless, you using a cleaning agent that can dissolve the wax.

Ok, thanks KE4AVB...I figured I'd have to clean it again...I'll use some carb cleaner and welding cleaner wires...let you know if it works.

I just wanted to thank KE4AVB one more time for his help! I did as you suggested and cleaned carb again with carb cleaner and a small welding cleaning wire. I did find some waxy substance inside the small jet next to the main jet orifice! Once I ran the wire through it and used the carb cleaner, the engine ran perfect! All this time...I thought that my Ultrasonic cleaner was the cats MEOW and would clean everything! Not so! From now on I will use this method after cleaning with ultrasonic cleaner to make sure all the orifices are cleaned out! KUDOS to KE4AVB. This was a valuable lesson!

dart,
What cleaning solution are you using in your US machine? An US cleaner will work very well IF you use a cleaning solution specifically MADE for carbs.
We have used this one with great results for about 5 years now:

That being said, we have always used tiny wire probes to clean out any/all passageways BEFORE we place the carb in the US cleaner.

Michael, that's the same solution that I use. And it does work quite well...it just didn't clean up the one orifice this time though and I think the moral of the story is... use those fine wires to make sure everything is clear like you do. I haven't done this before...now I know!

I have similar issues with low emissions type carbs. I use tag wire to clean the orffices and very low pressure air, like 15 psi and then run thru ultrasonic using hot water and 50/50 white vinegar and water.
If it has a aluminum body and the body of the carb and the bowl is pittings I sometimes have to do a ultrasonic again after the carb has been ran for few days on the engine.
Very small pieces of the aluminum or rust comes loose and clogs (restricts) the low speed orffice again.

This is why I replace the carb with a new one most generally.
That carb issue was your customers fault and you may have to replace the carb again and advise him to take better care of his eq., before he triess to blame you for his neglect.
