Hydrostatic tranny adjustment...help!!!

Postby dart451 » Fri May 06, 2016 1:50 pm

I have a Craftsman tractor, 917.275821, that I have worked on before for the tranny not going into reverse. Last time I just cleaned the linkage and tranny area and it was able to go in reverse. This time I cleaned everything but it will barely go into reverse...(creeps). So, I tried to adjust the two bolts (B) & (C) for the shifter doesn't want to go back in the reverse slot hardly at all. It appears by the picture that there is a little tab (A) that wont let it go any farther in reverse. How can I get this tractor to go into reverse again??

Appears to be as the same as the LT2000 I have here with the Peerless 2000 Hydro setup.

B and C are for adjust the neutral position of the shifter lever. First check the shifter linkage on the left on transaxle. There is three possible positions on that side. This can be change if the shifter linkage on the right is hitting its limit. This to compensate for different length shifter linkages. It is usually in the center position.

After this checked and/or moved then you will readjust the shifter neutral postion. Raise the rear off the ground, start the engine and engage the ground drive, place in the position where no forward or reverse movement of the wheels. Now the shut down the engine loosen "C" and "B" move the shifter to neutral on the fender and retighten.

Now test for reverse movement. If little or movement in reverse and forward engages normally through the full range then you have internal problems.

If anyone know different please correct me as have only had to make minor adjustment to this setup in the past.

Thank you for you response...I didn't see any other adjustments, "shifter linkage on the left on transaxle", but I will look again to see if I can find them.

KE4AVB, This is on a DLT 3000, 18.5 Briggs. I cannot seem to find this three possible positions on the left side of transaxle. I do have the shifter in neutral position and the tractor does not move...I just have no movement for the shifter to go rearward...

Ahhh... I found out which transaxle it has which is the Hydro Gear 314-0510. So part of what I posted is incorrect as was referring to the Perrless.

Now I have had one these to give problems with reverse. There is an actuator lever inside the unit opens one of two check valves that which determines direction the wheel motor turns. On the one I repaired one of the check valves unscrew itself to where the actuator lever keep it open; hence, the customer only had forward movement. These are inside the filter. Items 23 and 75 are check valves and 14 and 107 are the actuator parts. Note the two check valves are different as one has a bleeder hole so if you remove them which you to do to even change the filter base pay attention as to which is which.

Glad to her you found the problem. Must have been just enough play in the linkages to cause to problems.
