B&S magneto / armature

Postby cadman60 » Sun Apr 15, 2018 10:52 am

I have an old lawn mower that I'm trying to get running for my son to use in his small yard. I tried to get it running yesterday but after pulling on it a number of times I hooked up my spark tester and found there was no spark. Here are the numbers for the engine:
MODEL - 92902
TYPE - 1017 05
CODE - 79013122
I have a brand new coil, B&S #298316 that I purchased years ago in my parts bin. I'm not sure which engines this coil fits. Can someone tell me if I can use this coil on the engine above? If I can't can you tell me which engines this coil will work on? Thanks for your help.

That coil is for the old 4 and 5 hp horizontal shaft engines.

When I cross the part number 298316 it came up as 397358 for 7-16 HP engines such as 170000, 190000, 280000, and 310000.

What you need would be PN 591420 which is Magnetron coil so you would disconnect the points and condenser if it haven't already been done.

Thanks guys for the replies. It still has points and condenser in the engine. With the Magnetron coil, do I need to purchase any additional parts? Any modifications need done to the engine?

NO to both of your questions. Chances are it is the points and/or condensor, not the coil, however, I would not screw around replacing them. The Magnetron upgrade is the ONLY way to go, as has already been suggested. My son and I have installed them on lots of the old 3 & 5 HP horizontal-shaft "Kool Bore" engines from the 60's and 70's. Installation is easy peasy lemon squeasy!
