Briggs 135232-0036-01 carb spring configuration...

Postby dart451 » Sat Jun 30, 2018 7:07 pm

Hello,

I have an old briggs 135232-0036-01 engine that I'm trying to get running. It appears the owner somewhere lost the spring behind the gas tank and possibly a spring on top of carburetor. I'm replacing the carburetor with a 498298 but, on the briggs diagram, I see two different carburetor configurations, one 90 and the other 90A. I thought I could tell which one I need by the Type number of 0036-01 but I don't see this number at all in the listing! 90 shows no upper governor spring, 90A shows an upper carburetor spring. Trying to figure out what springs I might need for this engine to run correctly...

Hi Dart

If you're just trying to get the engine running, the only spring you actually need is the main governor spring. The governor link spring and carburetor link spring just take out the slack between the wire link and the hole in the bell crank or the throttle shaft and help prevent wandering RPM. Get the engine running first, then worry about the link springs later. All the best,

Well at you got the right carburetor. Now the hard part is figuring out what you need. The controls 2 section should most of the parts just don't where they go. Boy the New Portal is going to take some to get use to. I haven't use it in a few days boy did they changed things around.

On the springs it depends if the engine used governed idle or not.

Thanks guys...I think the new carb I ordered should work then...KE4AVB, never did find the exact Type number for the governor spring but I ordered one for the 0038 which is the closest. Really appreciate the feedback gentlemen! I'd be at a loss without you guys!

This might help understand the Briggs IPLs. There are parts (base part) that are use on most models these part numbers are list first without any reference type numbers then they type specific part numbers when certain types requires a different part other than the base part. When looking if your type is not listed then you use the base part number.

Then there are times when changes are made during the manufacturing life of the equipment require a different part. This is when the the date code break is listed. This is different than the simple superseded part number we all see time to time as they source parts from different vendors.
