Wisconsin motor ignition points search

Postby dart451 » Tue Sep 04, 2018 1:18 pm

Anyone have a clue where I might find a set of points for a Wisconsin horizontal BKND-369383-5700077 ? Cannot seem to locate them!

Provided if the BKND and the BKN are basically the same engine then you would need the whole distributor assy.

Here is link to the IPLs for the old Wisconsin engines.

This is the same thing I found KE4AVB! It shows no break down of the magneto box where the points reside! So, this is a head scratcher to say the least! I originally was not going to work on this engine...it was bolted to a stucco mixer machine and it took quite a bit of effort to get the motor separated from the machine because the magneto box was not accessible unless the engine was removed. HA! Now that I have it removed, it appears you can't just get points for the machine...LOL

Set the engine to #1 top dead center, and pop the cap off, make a mark where the rotor is pointing, then pull the distributor and run it down to your local NAPA ,they probably can match it up , Most of those distributors were Wico, or Fairbanks-Morse (and similar) and you can probably still find ignition parts for them from NAPA ,or if you can identify the distributor make and model, plenty of new old stock still out there in circulation.

I dug a little deeper in the IPLs and the breaker set with condenser is PN YQ26 for YS49S1 distributor if that helps. I hope you find a better price than I have seen. OUCH!!!

That's a magneto. I'd bet it's Fairbanks-Morse

- Actually used to be several businesses around that specialized in them - One of them used to be a Briggs & Stratton distributor we first signed up with way back in 1987 .. could order our briggs parts and then drive over and pickup the order same day,no shipping.

However, the magneto business largely disappeared but Im sure there's still a few specialist places you can ship them out to for rebuilds , if you don't feel confident in being able to do one yourself.

They are basically a self-contained ignition with their own "flywheel" (spring loaded magnet rotor), primary and secondary coils, points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, etc just driven off one of the engine gears (usually the cam shaft) , you could actually be mean and give yourself (or someone) a hefty jolt by turning the gear in the right direction while holding it in your hands and having anything anywhere near the rotor or coil secondary.. Turn, turn, turn, you can feel spring load up,and then *SNAP* there goes the spark.

Before you remove the mag, remove the pipe plug behind it and rotate the crank untilyou see the notched gear. Now unbolt the mag and do not move the crank until the mag is reinstalled. Once off rotate the gear in normal direction, you should feel resistance the hear a snap, if not the impulse coupling spring behind the gear is broken, a common problem.
