JD L130/Kohler command 23 wont start

Sorry, don't have model/serial numbers yet. Friend called and wants me to look at his tractor. He used it earlier in the week and everything was fine. Tried to start and turned over but would not start, so he starts looking around under the hood...everything looked connected. Then he removed the air cleaner and sees a small "ball bearing" sitting on the carb/filter base. I said your little boy has been busy playing in the garage.. I am stopping by this weekend to look at it. Am I crazy for thinking the "ball bearing" was not from the engine?

Any thoughts?

Don't they have a little ball bearing in the spit cup in front of the carb? At least it seems familiar!
