IDing Tecumseh carb

Postby 38racing » Sat Oct 06, 2018 5:31 pm

I have a series7 with manufacturing code of 5172. The list at outdoorpowerinfo does not have it listed. I'm trying to find carb number for which might narrow down the engine model it was on.

My list skips from 5171to 5175.

I may have narrowed it down . it appear that tecumseh v twin came in 4 model numbers. Tvt691,ov691ea,ov691ep and vtx691. Checking a sample of spec numbers I find 2 carbs used. 640221 and 640333. The 640333 is used on the vtx691 that I have identification on. I will compare it's carb manufacturing number with the 5172 on the carb of the unidentified vtwin. Then i can compare component part numbers. I already see that bowl assemblies have different number.

Except that on the list I just found 640221 and it's m number is 5156. And 640333 is on list as 5301. Be interesting to see what I find when I check the carb.
I did find one carb number in the list that had 4 different m numbers.

If you only one on the engine it is different than the only Tecumseh v-twin that have seen and worked on which has twin carbs.

I have 2 vtwin engines with each having 2 carbs. Only the vtx691 has the engine id. Other one lost in fire when label burned up. Now I have just checked one from the vtx. Man code is 5296 and again missing from list. Ipl says this carb is 640333 which is on the list with man code of 5301. I've compared ipl for both 640333 and 640221 carbs. Bowl assembly parts all same except main jet. I know the burned one is not vtx because crankshafts are different. Vtx has longer pto.

I emailed the mower model number to MTD but they didn't maintain a record of the engine numbers that went on it. Have to wonder how they would deal with a recall if there was an engine fire hazard. Or maybe records not kept longterm.

They just recall everything within a specified manufacturing date range that might have had such an engine on it and let the dealers figure it out. If the engine model-spec-serial does not apply, there's no warranty paid, costs the company nothing, costs the dealers a bit of time and customer hassle (especially if they do pickup and delivery for free)

Can you believe this. I was taking the carbs apart to clean. First one no issues. Second one I removed bowl and set it in container. Minute later I hear click and sense motion. Nozzle must have been under tension in bowl and launched out. Found nozzle but not the spring.
