Installing Intake Valve Oil Seal

Postby dennis » Sun Feb 17, 2019 7:12 pm

I am working on a Briggs & Stratton M 312777, T 0130-E1, C 980407ZD engine. Getting ready to put head back on, and was wondering if there are any tips for installing the intake valve oil seal (part #690968) to keep from damaging it.

use an appropriate sized deep well socket where you drive only on the metal part of the seal and tap the socket until the seal is fully seated.

also make sure the valve stem is free of burrs and nicks especially re-using the old valve , they can develop a sharp little ridge where the retainers catch on the stem that can cut the seal.

I have heard you should put the seal on the valve, and then press it on to its base. Seems it would be easier to press or tap seal with appropriate socket onto base, and then install the valve. Thoughts????

maybe the valve would keep it straight.

That's probably it. Makes it a little harder to tap down, but probably keeps it straighter.
