Huskee log splitter problems

Postby samcarpen » Mon Apr 15, 2019 6:08 am

Mdl. LS401221TS with Briggs 104M02-0020-F1. Pulls starter handle out of your hand. During my L-head days, I was taught that mower engines required a blade to operate. I'm assuming that's still the case. What would be the correct engine for this splitter?

Thanks Sam

That engine appears to have a heavy cast iron flywheel. First check the valve adjustments. Now I have seen a few with the ACR bad on this camshaft too. Both will cause compression kick back as well a partially shear flywheel key.

As to if it is the right engine that 22 ton splitter came with a 190 cc engine and not a 163 cc. IE it should have a 6.5 hp engine if you want to operate it at full capacity.

Do you need the owners/IPL manual for this splitter?

yeah don't forget to check flywheel key too - have seen plenty enough of them with sheared keys even though they don't have blades

Well, flywheel seems to be aluminum. Valves needed adjustment. Because it's still a bear to start and its poor condition, I was able to talk my customer into considering a new engine. If anyone could recommend a replacement engine, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Sam

The 125P02-0012-F1 appears to the upgrade to 190cc engine 25mm crankshaft. The crankshaft would need to be shorten as the 104M02-0020-F1 engine 2.768" [70.3mm] and the 126P02-0012-F1 is 3-5/32" [80.16875mm] or spacers used.

You to do some online searching for this engine but I have email Power Distributors on why it not listed on their site. It may be out of production or is superseded already.

Engines with heavy flywheel ,you need to get the base engine model and add on extra parts ordered individually for the needed features.. Its a change they made a couple years ago to further reduce SKU's I remember going over it in one of their annual update seminars.. However, emailing PD you can get that same info from them with less work, although you do gotta wait for replies

Actually I just got a call back from PD. The above engine list for $240 and is available. For some reason the their system rejects the full model number I used by cut and paste.

As for the flywheel a heavy wouldn't be need since it is driving a hydraulic pump but said the crankshaft will need to be shorten or spacers added. You're only fighting the engine's compression at startup. There is one other possible problem and that is with the recoil position. The last vertical log splitter engine I replaced require turning the engine 90 degrees CW so the operator wasn't smacking the splitter when starting. It require new mounting holes and the operator will not be able to change the oil except by using an oil extractor but he went 10 yrs without changing the oil. No wonder the engine failed.

Thanks for all the help. Ended up buying a Briggs & Stratton 128M02-0134 engine and BS-Shroud-11 from Small Engine Warehouse for $212.17 shipped. Also purchased a 1/2" to 7/8" L095 Flexible 3-Piece L-Jaw Coupling Coupler Set for $23.99 shipped. Installation was easy and splitter now starts and runs like a dream.
