kohler xt675-2034 air filter

I brought home a friend's sp toro recycler to replace belt. I can't ask him any questions right as he was headed for a walking tour of southern Italy. I figured I'd service it too. Right now it has a thick foam air filter in it.The air filter cover is the one button style. I've looked at several places for ipl and they consistently show a paper filter which my supplier has. They show a picture number for a pre cleaner but it's not shown in the parts number list and my supplier shows no pre cleaner. Has anyone seen just a foam filter in these models or should I conclude that someone thought it was a good idea to put one in his engine.
I'd also like to add a fuel shutoff. The fuel line is the original as it has the original date stamped on it. I'm wondering what the ID would be. The line seems to narrow from carb to tank and then expands a bunch to go on tank output nipple.

Is the filter Width 3 1/2" Length5 3/4" Height1"? If so then it is Kohler PN 14 083 09-S. It is not listed as the unit had a more square style filter box and appears that someone might have changed it from the snap fit to the one with the knob or there is a mix up of the info for that spec number.

The Stens 055-002 filter is probably a Kohler filter and they are just charging more for it. I know they just sent some prefilters that were still in the Kohler packaging.

The box is one button snap and matches the ipl. Ipl shows also a 2 button with that larger filter. Opening is 3.5 x 4 1/4. Ipl says 1408315s and my supplier shows this so that's what I'll order. No foam shown. And the foam in his would be too thick to be a pre cleaner.

I think Kohler dropped that smaller foam filter was the 1408316S but is superseded to 1408315S.

Quite a tight fit of the cover with the paper element. No wonder belt broke as mower clogged with grass.took enough time just cleaning caked stuff from drive pulley. Still wondering if fuel line id is 1/4 as I would like to add a shutoff.

Hope this helps, 06/15 Kohler published Parts Bulletin # 262 for the XT 650 and XT 675. In short version you need to change out the air filter base, kit number is 14 743 03-S comes with filter and gasket. Then replacement filter will be the blue 14 083-22S.
