briggs bowl gasket for 124t02

Postby 38racing » Sun May 12, 2019 11:04 pm

the ipl shows 4 pictures of 975 which is a float bowl kit 796611. within the kit it shows 2 bowl gaskets ,
137 796610 Gasket-Float Bowl
137A 693981 Gasket-Float Bowl
-(1/16" Thick)

My supplier shows the kit as having the 1/8 gasket (796610)

For some reason it's $3.00 sold individually I think and the 1/16 is $1 but sold in pack of 10.
Briggs IPL doesn't show why 2 sizes of bowl gasket. Anyone know why and which to use?

You would use whichever one that is currently on the carburetor. The reason some carburetors require the thicker gasket due to a long tower. If you use the wrong gasket you will have problems. If a thick gasket is used on the one that uses the thinner gasket you risk damaging the fuel bowl and if you the thin gasket on the one that uses the thick gasket you have fuel leakage.

This use of a thin gasket on the carburetors meant to have the thick gasket I personally seen the carburetor to leak as if the float valve wasn't sealing; otherwords, if just sitting not running fuel will run out pass the gasket area as the fuel level is above the bowl lip.

This why I stock both gaskets. And the 1/16 is an older style gasket therefore cheaper.

Thanks. I'll buy some thick ones. I noticed on the 2 similar units that I just worked on that the bowls were different. One was close to flat bottomed and the other had centre hole up in a recess.

looking again at ipl I see 4 carbs pictured but only 2 listed . One for before a date and one for after. Bowl number is same for both. Would the lip height on carb be different between them for whether it took thin or thick gasket? Bit of an issue is that I'm pulling carbs from donor units to put on a nice craftsman self propelled left at our dumpster minus the carb.

Actually there are 7 different carburetor picture as they tried make the drawing universal for the 200 or so versions of the 124t02. All the carburetors use the same fuel bowl. Just either 1/16 or 1/8 gasket.

Gee briggs can be inconsistent. I'm actually using a donor carb from a 12h802 (had to remove cover to see model number as not on the visible tab like newer models). Its ipl picture shows only 1 bowl gasket just 137. No 137a. But the list has 137 listed twice . one with each of the part numbers. It says one is 1/16. It doesn't bother to say what thickness the other one is.
I also have carb off a 123k02 and I note that bowl has the recessed bottom. I'm guessing that the one I have with non recessed bottom is an aftermarket replacement.

Actually there are two different fuel bowls as the recess bottom can't be reasonably used when there is an after fire solenoid present. Just can't the wrench in there remove or to tighten the solenoid. They are interchangeable. It just the recess one provides a place for water and trash to settle to.
