TroyBuilt Tiller

Postby lefty » Fri Feb 28, 2020 3:48 pm

I got this tiller in recently and based on what I've researched, the model number tag is junk. I can't read it at all and am trying to figure out what it is because it's missing a belt. I have to engine model type and code but that's all I can get. Unless it's somewhere else that I'm missing. Any help is appreciated.

The engine numbers are:
130292-1664-01
Code: 83012607

based on date code being in 1983, (Check the labels to see if it references "Garden Way Mfg") then you may have a 5-digit model number which may be stamped into the transmission case casting - It was not until MTD completed the buyout of Troy-Bilt that they had a MTD model & serial number. (Serial number on a Garden Way Troy-Bilt would also be stamped into the transmission case, I believe) In other words, depending on what year it was built and by which manufacturer, it may not even have a model tag, but may be stamped in the transmission case.

The number on the sticker might start with S122

The number on the side of the case appears to be: 20508CT
The number on the top of the case appears to be : 20512CT

Do not trust this as I just started lookin...
The Troy-Bilt Pony tiller, a forward-rotating tiller with rear tines, makes quick work of creating loose, aerated soil in the garden and landscape. Troy-Bilt Pony tillers have two belts, a forward drive belt, which measures 4L by 23.80 and a reverse drive belt, which measures 3L by 27.44, located in the "tine and drive" assembly.

The 20508 and 20512 are part numbers (20512 is the top cover) S122 does seem to fit within the range of some of the models (and yes prefix is letter S) so it does help to narrow it down to a few models possible , such as 20595 - Troy-Bilt Pony III Rear-Tine Tiller (SN: S101751 - S164132) Keep looking now that you know what numbers to look for (20594,20595,thereabouts) which might help you figure out if you have a versioned model (Pony 1, Pony II, Pony III, Pony IV , etc)

I'll start digging around. Thank you. Not sure if this photo helps shed any light but there's no I, II, III or anything like that. So maybe just a strait Pony?

It is definitely a Pre-MTD model at least, but no they never showed the revision level on any of their labels.. only way to tell which would be with the model number, or complete serial number.. That whitewashed label on the right would not have been a model tag.., I think it was a QC (Quality Control ID Tag) label... I do believe it would be a Pony III though - from a file I had laying around I forgot about:
Production Run Dates: / Starting Serial numbers: these were for Pony model by Garden Way - (Garden Way went bankrupt in 2001, which is when MTD bought them)
May - 1982 S101843
Jul - 1982 S105606
Jan - 1983 S117319
Jul - 1983 S129028
So that would put yours in the first half of 1983 when it was built, I'd suppose around March to April or so..

Going back to your first photo, I seem to recall the model number on those was in a hard to get to spot , not easy to see (and not easy to damage) possibly under or on the belt cover, or just back of the engine (Is that a metal label sticker on frame between engine and belt cover?) or it was on transmission housing somewhere.. they liked to locate then in non-obvious places that were typically protected from dirt scrubbing, weed damage, etc etc.. but often those same places were prone to "gunk" build up (from gear oil mixing with dirt) which ended up covering the numbers..

Appears to be the 20595 or at first the four characters are in that serial number range.

https://www.partstree.com/models/20595-troy-bilt-pony-iii-rear-tine-tiller-sn-s101751-s164132

Also be be 20596 or 20597 if electric stater is involved.
