Troybilt Chipper Vacuum

Postby lefty » Sun Sep 25, 2022 8:03 pm

I have this machine in the shop.

Garden Way
Model: 47287
Serial 472871104839

Engine: 192437-1125-E1 990701Y0

I have a bad starter. The starters I'm finding don't appear to have the proper mounting flange. I'm finding 498149 as a starter. The thing about this flange is that it lowers the starter so it will fit and clear the chipper chute.
The schematic I'm finding is here: https://shop.briggsandstratton.com/pages/parts-lookup#/Briggs_%26_Stratton/192437-1125-E1/Electric_Starter%2c_Flywheel%2c_Rewind_Guard/1924371125E1/04370006D/y

There are two starters shown and the flange is sold separately (shown as 801A) and doesn't appear to come with the starter or be available at all. The starters I'm finding have a mounting flange but they don't appear to be the same and would mount the starter in a position that it wouldn't fit...I think. The problem is that I think my starter is bad because there is a bunch of play in the bushing on the flange. It's pressed in there and doesn't appear to be a part that can be replaced as it looks like it comes with the flange, which I can't find. I'm wondering what my next move is. The brushes and everything else on the starter look fine. Just a bunch of play and a chunky rotation.

PN 691429 is NLA and the PN 691283 that supposedly supersedes it will not work beside it is ridiculously priced. Your only option if the bushing is worn out is to make your own bushing.

Places like Grainger or McMaster-Carr would have the bushing material need machined to fit the specs needed. Both these companies have saved my bacon several times over the last 7 years. And I use both of them to cut costs on parts like screws and o-rings when I know the specs of the part needed.

I just had ordered a M10-1.25 Helicoil tool kit with some 20mm long heli coils to do three head bolts holes on a Kawasaki FX850V. Weird problem every other bolt of six had stripped out on No 1 cylinder. No telling when I will need the M10-1.25 tools but they are now in my arsenal of tools just like the 5/16-18 ones that I regularly use on Briggs engine oil sump pans. Those 5/16 helicoils I didn't think I be using those tools much but it has surprised me.

Thanks. I'm not even sure how I would press it out. It's seated against a flange on one side.

Actually, I just found a brush kit that comes with bushings for 12ish dollars. I'm wondering if the bushings would be the same size as the one in the drive cap I have.

Okay that bushing should be .750 OD with Flange diameter of .950. The flange is .100 thick. Overall height of the bushing is .533 with a .493 ID Bushing appear to powdered iron. Starter journal measures .493. Now take with a grain of salt as this from a used starter.
