The Australian media is obsessed with US politics
When ever I am in the company of a US citizen they are amased about how much US politics are in Australian news, often telling me that it was a more comprehensive cover than they get back in the USA .
WIW I have not voted for a majority party down here for a very long time with the exception of the first Howard Government ( introduced a GST ) & the Rudd Government ( Supposed to do fibre to the house internet )
We have compulsory voting at all levels , Commnwealth, State & Local so we don't get the same generated hysteria needed in the USA to get bums off the sofas & into the polling booths
However because you have to vote the parties do not need to endorse candidates that are worth electing , and usually don't so we end up with idological idiots who just tow the party line and wait out time till they can draw a pension .
We also have a plethoria of small parties , many of which have good agendas and with prefferencial voting allows me to tell the sitting government what I think they should do .
They were televising the Trump rally down here yesterday & I was amazed at how many supporters still think the last election was "stolen"
We have early voting & postal voting as well as polling day voting
Early voting always heavily favours the conservatives ( misnamed Lberals ) while postal voting always heavily favours the left ( called labour ) and in many cases it i those final postal votes that determine the outcome so your last presidential election followed the play list to the letter .

Getting back to EPA & enforcement.
Down here the proof that a department is working properly is the number of successful prosecutions .
As such it is easier to get a conviction for Joe Stupid than Mike Megga Bucks so it is the little guys who cop it in the neck where as the big guys who sell non compliant stuff by the container load get ignored .

That just like things that happen here. A lot of small operators don't the money to fight with unlike the big time operators that have teams of lawyers that finds all the loop holes written into the laws.

It like a small town that enforces the speed limit on a section of four lane highway but ignores other areas where speeding is more of a problem. It mainly because one area is light traffic and it easier to stop them and the other areas they likely to get their backsides ran over. Well I know of speed trap 64 so I avoid it when I can as that may have as many 6+ traps in a single run. quite a few for less than 2 miles of road.

Arhh speed traps
I was needed to put on a uniform & stand on a foot ball field ( Rugby Union ) so a fiends team did not loose another game by default
The game we 40 miles away and there were 2 ways to get there
Via the new 6 lane divided road expressway or via the mostly 2 lane old highway full of hairpin corner s & big hills ( motorbike heaven )
As we left the oval, a small ( ford escort ) panel van with 6 surf boards on the roof was directly in front of us
They took the old road which is 10 km longer & we took the new road
There were at least a dozen speed traps on the new road and we did the legal limit of 110kph ( 80mph )
When we got to the end, the panel van was on the side of the road & the surfies were tucking into hamburgers & milkshakes ( pre Mc Donalds so they were made to order )
The old road is about 10 km longer and has an 80 kph general speed limit + 2 x 60 kph town zones
Protecting people or cashing in ?

Traffic can be a pain to deal with even when you can travel at the legal needle. There were times when I work in town that I could either leave at quitting time drive straight home taking over an hour or leaving, stopping for a snack (taking 15 minutes to eat it and then going the rest of the way home. Either way I usually got there at the same time.

I been known to driving at the speed limit and have driver to go flying pass me but yet get at the next stop light at the same time.

But new roads are just money makers.

And I get a kick out those cops that thinks when I walk in a business they are supposedly securing that bitch about a small folding box cutter but not the 2 ft long screwdrivers and the large wrenches in my toolbox. I had one to say to the another no weapons found in the toolbox; must had been totally blind. I believe the 36mm wrench in there is a deadly weapon if used improperly. Well the last time they would not let me pass without giving my box cutter which one my needed tools I just turn around a left so the customer did not get his machine repaired; until, brought it out to me so I could carry it to the shop for something I could done onsite with the right tools. Oh well I just made more money that day as I charge them for the extra time involved.

Personally years ago I could talk to the police now I avoid it as much as I can, I don't even say hi to them as if I do they look at me strangely like they are willing to attack at any second.
