Briggs sump interchange?

Postby Arkie » Sun Mar 12, 2023 5:06 pm

Need opinion about Briggs Single cylinder OHV Intek sump interchange.
The sump is cracked at the oil plug hole on the 31Q engine and leaking oil.

I have a possible donor engine sump.

It appears maybe the sump for these two engines is same and is a 592849 ????

Need 2nd opinion????????????

generally they are the same but the 03 appeared to have used a different counterweight so yuou may need transfer that too from the donor engine.

The 592849 was first used in 2005.

I do believe they'd interchange - as I recall, a lot of Briggs engines based on the same base model (31x) would have had the same block & sump patterns , so as long as the style (Oil filter or no, oil pump style if equipped, etc) was the same (or just about) they'd interchange - even the ones with pump & oil filter capability would fit the splash lube engines (you'd just have to plug up or block off the pump & oil galley holes for pressure lube) (I have seen it done, but not done it myself)

My donor engine had a bad sump. :(

I'm looking for a sump for this Briggs Intek single cylinder engine.

I see a number 2007 cast into the sump both external and internal but this number does not tell me anything about part number?

I see two different Briggs parts numbers listed for sumps. A 795938 and on others a 592849 (not sure about how to determine the part number change per my code number????????)

Can anyone ID which part number sump is the correct one for the 031124ZE code engine? :?:

The 795938 kit includes the newer counter weight and newer connecting links. The 592849 does not include the counter weight and links. The 795938 kit list for $223 where the 592849 is $218. Unless they are including the counter weight which is $97 they are ridiculous for the later sump kit. And the IPLs are right neither include Gerotor (oil) pump.

This is why you would need to change the counter weight and links.

Actually if I had to buy a new sump from Briggs I would order the 795638 kit and save counter weight and links if I was installing the sump on a newer engine and sell the counter weight and links later.

Here is an image of the 592849 kit. Notice the lack of the Gerotor and its cover plate and o-ring.

And 795938 kit. Doesn't show the links but are suppose to be included.

And I thinking about it the oil pump cover o-ring can be gotten from McMaster Carr at around $16 for 10 under PN 1302N632. No reason to pay the $5.93 ea from Briggs.
