Sears Model 536.797500 tiller

Postby Dave » Tue Sep 05, 2023 12:16 pm

I purchased this last fall but now I was going to use it and have a problem. I am not a 2 cycle mechanic by any means so bear with me please.

The machine starts fine and I can control the speed but not the correct way.

The throttle cable connects to a moveable part on the right side of the engine and seems to function properly but the engine does not change speed. But if I reach in on the LEFT side of the engine I can rotate the portion of the carb that has the adjustment for idle speed. If I rotate that valve the engine increases speed with no problem but there is a bit of smoke (not an issue for me).

I assume that the throttle cable should be making the part on the opposite side of the engine move so speed increases but I only have the owner manual which has a terrible picture of the adjustment screws only. If there is no linkage between the 2 is there an internal part of the carb that makes this happen?

I took it to a local shop who said he would have to "look into it" at $89/hour. The machine is not worth that much and I may be better off just selling it for junk at the local scrap yard--but I would love to fix it!

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

536.797500 has a Tecumseh 143.941600 (TC200-2103C) engine per the owners.

Sounds like you maybe missing a spring.

Refer to the Tecumseh TC200 Service Manual for more details on the throttle setup.

Thanks for the link. I will have to inspect the motor for details and see what type of spring it needs as the only reference is a list of 4 different colors on springs and which hole the go in. I appreciate the info

If you look up the TC200-2103C you would find the PN 570716 is a kit consisting of a spring and governor vane.

I have to agree as I can't find any spring that looks like the one you describe. Please bear in mind I am not a skilled mechanic (if you want to chat about defibrillator maintenance I am your guy though) and I am having difficulty finding these components. From my description in the original post can you point me in the right direction as the pictures in the manuals don't help me a lot? I truly appreciate your help!

All I got on the yard is a TC300 but the setup is the same.

Here is image where the governor spring is normally. It is before the fuel tank is removed.

And this with the fuel tank and recoil starter removed show the governor vane attached to the carb. Takes a small trox bit to remove the screw from carb. In the it is hide behind the engine framework. The hex screws are 1/4" drive and the nuts are 5/32". Just be extra removing the tank as the gas line needs to come off first. Plus the fuel fitting on the carb may very fragile. The one here was already broken.
