I forgot to mention that you may only have the shell of the needle bearing left in place. Still can be remove just one those holding your tongue over your eye tooth times; otherwords, got to be patient and baby it. If you get my meaning.

The needle bearing a common one. And if I remember correctly it take two of them. They should be 741-0335 SCE108 bearings (.625 X.813 X.495); unless, they changed the specs.

The following should the correct parts too.
711-1109 Input shaft
717-1464 14 tooth bevel gear
736-0335 Thrust washer .635 x 1.26 x.06
716-0108 Snap ring .437

Match your size for the mtd. I got top bearing out with punch. Appears that the bottom one was distributed into the gear box.
Ps mtd want 21$ each $10 for the snap ring

Now you why I order the last bearings from Amazon which have the SCE108 @$5 US ea. Even Grainger went up on them. BTW these are the same that is use in the 6 speed Tecumseh transmissions (780086).

Bearings are in. Seals and eclip came today. The jd grease seems yo be alternative to when gear oil leaks past seal. Since it's likely thinner than the original grease I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to put a thin rtv between the casing halves .

Well I have done it myself for those that seem to leak, just be around the moving shafts and use no more than necessary. Usually because the case got warped. Just make the oil seals are good and the bushings are not worn out. Plus on reassembly careful put things back together as the bushing are keyed.

Watched a video where the guy had trouble getting top cover on because he didn't know the bushings on the brake shaft were keyed.
