Tecumseh Gas Tank Cap question

Postby cadman60 » Fri Apr 26, 2024 5:36 pm

I have a Tecumseh 8hp XL/C, model # HM80 155653T, Engine Family: YTPXS.3182BA, Displacement: 318cc, D.O.M.: 9337, mounted on my log splitter. I just replaced the fuel lines from the tank to the shut-off valve, and from the shut-off valve to the carb. I put some gas in the tank and wanted to see how full it was so I took a flashlight and looked into the tank to see how full it was because I had drained the tank. I discovered that sponge cube, (see pics), floating around in the tank. I got it out of the tank but not sure how it got in there. I got this splitter, used, years ago. Whenever I put gas in the tank that rubber piece was always loose, laying on the top of the tank filler neck. Does anyone know how these parts fit together? Which way does the "dome" in the rubber piece face, toward the cap or toward the tank? Am I missing a retaining device to hold everything together that would go over the center pin in the cap? Thanks for any help you can provide.

That's basically the baffle to the fuel tank vent. Appears to be missing the metal dome-shaped aluminum cup - basically the foam goes in the cap (which is meant to prevent fuel slosh from exiting the) and then covered by the plastic dome with the holes in it, then the aluminum cup (cup facing tank side, dome facing plastic dome) which is then all retained by that plastic pin. They're notorious for falling apart in high vibration applications like a log splitter , out of balance snowblowers, and the like. No way to fix em, just put a new fuel cap on, or you can live with just the cap (but then you get fuel sloshing out the vent hole - don't be tempted to plug the hole or the fuel tank will vapor lock.) at least that's how I recall them, - they have had multiple cap design changes over the years.
How poor are they who have not patience. What wound did ever heal, but by degrees? - Iago (Othello Act II, Scene 3)

Thank you for the reply/info. Looks like I'm missing the aluminum cup so I'll just order a new cap.
