Got nailed by rock

Postby KE4AVB » Fri May 01, 2020 7:52 am

Boy yesterday was a day to remember. While driving a rock hit my windshield. Oh it happens time to time but this it was unusual. It was a very load impact as we meet 18 wheel dump wagon on a two lane road. I saw the broken windshield right after the impact after the initial shock wore off.

It is very strange crack. I have been hit the windshield before and have nicks on the outside of the windshield. But this time the damage is on the inside with only a scuff mark on the outside. Anyways glad the windshield was there as it would took me out instantly and cause my passenger death too from the resulting wreck at 45 mph.

Now I got to get the windshield replaced. Liability only so it is out my pocket expense.

Anybody had a windshield to break like this from an outside impact?

I imagine you came close to filling your pants! It was a good size rock to do that. I got hit by a golf ball, sounded like a grenade going off.

If you were able to document the particular truck it came off from, you could go after their insurance company - truckers are supposed to be responsible to secure their load so that nothing falls off, includes a walk-around of the truck after loading to be sure any loose rock is not outside the container and container properly secured.. if they don't it should be their liability. But you'd have to be able to know the unit number or license plate to show they were actually on that route at that time with the load that included that rock.. That's the hard part.

Good luck with that unless a witness had his wits about him and stopped.

I know a lady who following a pickup truck. An 18 wheeler passed in other direction. Its air wave picked a farm gate out of the pickup which smashed her windshield and door panel. Luckily she wasn't injured.
