Tachometers

Postby Mek-a-nik » Wed Dec 10, 2014 11:46 am

I have used a Tiny Tach. They're okay. But if time is money, it's a bit time consuming wrapping the wire and finding a place where it'll sit okay.

I have the old standby, a Treysit sirometer. It is a good backup, but sometimes there's no good spot to put it.

I tried a General Technologies Corp. Smart Tach TA100. http://www.amazon.com/GTC-TA100-Smartac ... B000RT9BH2 It has a hard time with small engine ignitions. The rpm's are alway switching from one mode to another, and you have to guess, by ear, which reading to use. Sometimes it switches around so much, you can't tell. I never tried it on any other kind of ignition (auto, etc.), so it may be good there.

Currently, I'm using one from Stens: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/Produc ... 80/57844/s There's no i.d. on it as to who makes it. It has been working very well for about 6 months now.

the stens is probably the old dixson 1082 that was made in grand junction co. This is very easy to use and it works well. My has been used for 15 years. Accuracy is close but not as accurate as some of the digital models.

Your tiny tach with the wire that must be wrapped around the sparkplug lead is not convenient. Accuracy is good. Tiny Tach makes several better models that are wireless. Look at this site: http://www.tinytach.com/handheld.php. I have a DTI-20K. This requires a few seconds after pressing the on button, but then reads very quickly. It updates every .5 second. Accuracy is within 10rpm. The tach shuts off after 1 minute of non use.

I also have the tach offered by STihl. This does not always read when hold next to the spark plug wire. Of my three tachs, I like the tiny tach described above.

Thanks, Bluemower. I'll look into that wireless tiny tach when the busy season lets up.
