Kind of funny--I worked for a Phone Company for 30 years. I retired 20 years ago thinking I could coast on out without a "Smart Phone". Grandson finally talked me into getting one. I am going thru another learning curve.

Just proves nothing is too hard as long you're willing to try and not afraid to ask for when needed. We all need help from time to time. Glad it was of help. I probably get one of those phones later as things improve here; just no other choices of carriers then Verizon here and they know it.

I am in one of those dead zones with limited carrier choices. I currently on an expensive cable internet service because AT&T doesn't even internet service here. At least the phone is reasonable but doesn't work when the power is out.

VOIP - over cable modem - modem with no power = no phone service.

Quite right BGS.

Cable service uses a cable modem which requires electric power from the electric company. It would work if I crank up the generator and connect to my mains provided the cable service isn't down too which was during the last power failure here. The previous power failure took out the modem and it took a week for Charter to get through their heads that I had no other phone. They would not come out unless they could call me. Customer service even gave me appointments and they still didn't show up; just close out the repair tags because they couldn't reach me by phone. Dumb.

Look like I going to need a handheld to access the auto patch on the Huntsville 2M repeater as a back-up. My Azden PCS4000 doesn't have a tone generator.

Sounds like Charter. I wish I could get them completely out of my life but there is not a good alternative to high speed (65 Mbps) internet. I have to admit it's pretty reliable unless someone backhoes a feeder.

If the cable system is still up you could put your modem on battery power (if it's not learning to swim on its back) and of course have a conventional phone. The exact reason we have a lima lima and a conventional phone at one location.

Cell phones aren't very handy if all the cell sites go down for lack of electrons. I've seen that happen and amateur radio was the only communication our fire department had with dispatch. Our repeater trustee went up and put the repeater on battery and we were up and running when the entire city of 30K people was without power.

in 2009 when we had the ice storm and lost power for over a week pretty much lost all communications we i was a cop and fire fighter we was only dispatched by ham radio but there was problems there to not everybody had them so us cops and fire fighters stayed at the fire house so we could get the calls so we could provide the sevices to all that was in need.

Back in '89 a tornado hit Huntsville, AL the only working communications was by radio. The whole are phone system was so overloaded nothing worked. I was traveling from Ft Payne right in the path of the tornado if wasn't was for my 2m rig I would have not even known about that a problem and that I was in the direct path.

And we had multiple times that power in the area would be out for several weeks. The last major outage was when sections of the main feeder lines were destroyed include their towers. Our area only had three sets of them feeding us power at that time. It took a week just to tie in into a nearby set out of Guntersville and that was off-lined several times due to overloads. Where I lived wasn't even re-connected for 3-1/2 weeks. At that time I didn't have a generator so everything was out except those that was powered off the 60W solar cells and inverter I had. So basically I had a small TV and a couple lights. Lots of BBQ was done. No fuel in area of course as the fuel stations were not working.
