I am not new to this crap been in the industry since 1984. I repair stuff that most wouldn't touch or do not know how.....

I happen to look at the bottom of the forum and saw that you were the newest member and I wanted to get ahead of bgsengine just once. He is a hard man to stay ahead of.

I asked a question and have been told how to run my business and how to properly repair carbs.
I do not care if I impress you or any one......
The question is how many carbs that the engine does run but lean because the float level is off????
Yea I am the one person they come to when it needs to be repaired.
Over 15 years working for my self and my customers do not find fault with my work, or what I charge them.
I ask this question when I go to a shop to purchase parts Are you finding the float levels off on B/S engines?
When the tec looks back with that what are you talking about willis look I know they are not looking.
This is a remove and replace shop. How long does it take to remove and rebuild a B/S carb when it is apart for a tune up??
So yea I am not here to impress. :roll:

Different parts of the country has different ways and attitudes toward maintenance. In my area most customers only carry in a piece of equipment in for any work only after it has failed to operate. Sad in a way as a little maintenance would save a lot expense down the road.

Most carburetors are design to allow for different float levels simply because the engines are asked to operate in non-level positions with limits. Most the Briggs carburetors on walk behinds usually have more problems with main jet being too lean for me because of the EPA requirements than float problems. I also seen several where the carburetors were flooding because deformed float hinges on plastic floats to where the floats can't even fully close needle to seal off the seating point because to floats are bottoming out.

After working 35 years on equipment, I have learn to take criticism and give feedback when ask. It's the person that asking that decide if it is right for them or not. I willing to learn new things, to try other ways of doing things, and to ask for help when needed.

I do get a lot of rigged repairs that has to corrected and the customer complain about the costs as they already paid someone to do the work. Most time the customer done had their equipment in the other shop several times trying to get a simple repair done and finally gave up on that shop.

I had one customer down the road from me right now that bragging that he can get fuel lines on his string trimmers replaced for a couple bucks including the fuel line. I seen some their work. I simply told him to go back if wanted that type of workmanship.

I also had one customer last year that spent over $400 having his riding mower supposedly repaired at another shop. He had me to check why he had no working horsepower with mower and I found the engine had two serious problems one was a blown head gasket and the other was the engine was simply worn out. I inform him of the bad news that engine would not last the season. Sure enough after two mowings the engine started blowing smoke like a freight train.

Just remember to keep it civil and business like here. So far in the three years this site has been up and running we only had to kick one person off the site other than spammers.

Actually might want to proof read your posts then - your actual question on that thread was "How many here are checking the float level on the carb at tune up??"
- Which was answered as it could only be read to mean "Part of a regular tune-up"

If you had phrased it as above here, the answer would have been different - My answer would have been *A LOT* as we DO find this to be a very common thing when dealing with a lean surge on those briggs carbs.

As far as my replies go as noted i just stated an opinion on how WE do business in that regard - how you run your business is entirely up to you. as far as I could read, no one was passing judgement other than on the idea of "trimming" the float to fix what should honestly be fixed by replacing the needle and seat. - again that is opinion - backed up by manufacturer technical manuals. The mileage you get out of your solution may work for you, but we would not dream of doing that.

Yes - plenty of shops don't even look at it. I can agree with you on that point.

At the very least might want to consider proof reading and/or re-reading your post before posting (that's what the Preview button next to Submit button is for..) - keeping in mind to try and say what you actually mean. :) As you have discovered it can quickly lead to mistaken impressions when the post seems rather vague or ambiguous - the read has to "interpret" what you're trying to say.

Does this guy sound a LOT like anyone else we know....er...KNEW?
I suspect he doesn't have a lot of friends...or real customers either...
I still wanna know if he replaces all the bowl gaskets on the carbs he opens up for some weird reason...
