Guess I must have missed your post the first time round, so I'll chime in now. I have run into this problem before, but the armature shaft usually breaks off instead of bending. With the engine cowling off and the sparkplug out, lift the Bendix into the ring gear and manually rotate the engine backwards so the pinion gear stays fully engaged with the ring gear. How much clearance do you have between the bottom edge of the magnet block and the top of the starter pinion? I clearance is more than ¼", the other members will get you through this one.
If the clearance is less than ¼", the pinion may be striking the bottom edge of the magnet block. To rectify this problem, remove the flywheel and remove the plastic fan from the flywheel. Take a coarse toothed file as you will be filing aluminum. Now file a ¼" wide 45º chamfer along the bottom edge of the magnet block. This will give the necessary clearance between the starter pinion and the magnet block to prevent a repeat failure. Be sure to check and if necessary replace the flywheel key if it is damaged. Make sure that taper on crankshaft and bore of flywheel are both clean and dry, torque flywheel bolt to 49 foot pounds. Recheck clearance just to be on the safe side. All the best,
Sky

When it comes to starters so far I have only replaced two in the last 8 yrs and that was because someone installed the wrong size starters as a replacement and they didn't fix the original problem either. Their solution was to just install a bigger battery.
