Engine Numbers

Postby lefty » Fri Sep 15, 2017 6:51 pm

I'm having trouble finding the numbers on this Briggs engine.

It is on a Troy Built mower Model: 11A-A230711
Serial: 10242K91577

I can't find numbers on the engine for the life of me. Nothing on the valve cover.

Looking for specs for valve clearance and such. The machine is running rough after carb cleaning, which didn't look dirty to begin with.

Any help finding the model type and code for this motor is appreciated.

Thanks.

11A-A230O711 2013 model year

Probably going to be 9P engine with it being 140 cc. Look on the crankcase on the same as the oil fill.

Actually a 2012 model year troy bilt

Lefty -When facing the valve cover of the engine, float carburetor is on your right, and exhaust on the left? That'll be an 09p series as KE4 noted and you will find the engine model, type and DOM and date codes on the left side of the engine block forward of the muffler , and serial number on the QR code label on the engine blower housing.

Thanks guys. I just found it on the carburetor bracket. It was covered in crud. 9P702-0005-F1. Mar 6 12

I don't see this in the single cylinder OHV manual. Would it be the 97700 & 99700 series?

BGS tnx for correction on the model year still figuring out the serials. Not there yet but getting a lot closer. Besides I haven't even seen a push mower in the shop for two years now; I was wondering if they even were making them any more.

Lefty, There is more service info in the APSI 85 and APSI 103. Also review DSB 1060 if your working with the carburetor; carburetor improvements shown. Copies available in the Downloads under Briggs, just navigate to the advance service info directory on the Google drive.

Perfect. Thank you.

So I'm having a problem with this one. The owner states that it was running rough and then stalled with flames coming from the exhaust. I took it in and observed it running rough. I cleaned the carb, which did not really look that dirty, with the same results. Valve clearances are within spec.

I thought now maybe it was sucking air from somewhere so I tried partially choking it with my hand a little bit at a time. Improvement was nominal.

I noticed some white smoke from the muffler and a strange smell so I took it off. Don't know exactly why but thought it couldn't hurt to take a look at it. Reinstalled it with the linkage for the auto choke.

Now it will start but only run for a few seconds before stalling. While it's running briefly I can see the choke plate flapping very quickly. I have not performed a leak down test at this point. What's my next move? I obviously have made it worse but the choke linkage was put back on exactly how it came off so I'm puzzled.

Thanks

Check your ignition timing IE flywheel key might sheared as with flames out the exhaust sounds like it is firing either late or early.

BTW just in case someone thinks I was wrong where the model number is on a 2015 9p, here is image. Still for the life of me figure out what was wrong with engine.

That's a trick question...it's a perfectly good engine with a moon roof.
