Honda HR215 with GXV140 engine

Postby Dale_W » Thu Oct 12, 2017 5:56 pm

The mower is a Honda HR215 KHMA serial MZAM-6284313 hydrostatic drive with blade clutch and electric start. Sticker says 5.0 Masters.
The engine is a GXV140, I can find the serial on the block GJAB-7630904, there is a sticker that has engine family YHNXS 1351AA, Stamped on the valve cover is ZE9 HM10

The problem? A few months ago it just locked up. Owner THEN put in oil, so I could not tell if it was run dry or not. But I think we know the answer.
I got it home, oops dropped it from the truck to the garage floor, and that jarred the engine free. Started and ran fine.
I made sure it had proper amount of oil.
Now a few months later, it locked up again. This time I can see oil barely touches dip stick when measured properly.
I would guess the oil was never changed, and now it consumes oil to the point of locking up.

I am looking for a replacement engine. It appears I need to find a type code. Perhaps a 4 character code. One site showed the type code right above the serial number.
Not on this engine.

Do you know where I might find the type code? Or, if you have a Honda engine supplier, maybe I can work with them to get the correct engine replacement.

I am not sure I would replace the engine if this was my mower. But the first step is to see if I can find an engine. She can decide if it is worth the money.

Thanks Much

Engine is specific to the mower - you wont find replacement parts for the engine - you need the mower model and serial to look up engine parts for Honda mowers and equipment.

BGS is right the engine being mower specific in this case.

First your Honda HR215 KHMA serial MZAM-6284313 is actually a HR215K1 HMA.

For replacement that crankshaft is use only on the HR215 except for one HR195 si it going to be hard to an alternate engine to fit the HR215 setup.

Thank you. When I search on the mower model, I sure do get a lot more hits.

It is looking like I will need to go to a lawn and garden place to buy the engine.

Does this seem right to you?

This engine consumes oil now. I just cannot see it being cost effective to tear it down, and replace what needs replacing.

Thanks again.

You will need to purchase an engine, if available, from a Honda power equipment dealer, and be prepared to pay. As has been mentioned, the engine is specific to the mower so a utility engine built for another brand will not fit. Unless you enjoy tearing down and rebuilding which you apparently do not it's time to look at a newer mower. I scrapped one for the same reason, burning oil, and parts were hard to find.

I called the Lawn and Garden Center where the mower was purchased. They tell me they can still get a replacement engine for that model.
RoyM, are you ready? $470 plus about $25 shipping.

It's a nice mower, but I cannot believe THAT nice. I will relay that info to the owner. But at this point, I think her dollar is best spent on a new mower, perhaps a nice $500 (not $850) Honda.

Thanks for the input all.

That is not unrealistic for a new engine but if the rest of the mower is in good shape it might be tempting. That quality is scarce in today's mowers, the closest Honda is the commercial at almost 1500 bucks, .

Since she doesn't check the oil ....maybe a $ 30 Craigslist mower is cheaper... :o

There's actually some wisdom in that thought, isn't there?
