Update: I just tried a primer bulb on my Briggs V twin Intek. I put the primer in line between the tank and fuel pump like you would on an outboard motor. I squeezed it a couple times and I could see the fuel going through the fuel filter. It fired right up and ran great.......for 30 seconds or so, then it lean surged and died. I have the standard black plastic vacuum operated fuel pump on the side of the engine and it doesn't seem able to pull fuel through the primer bulb. I'm thinking the fuel pump isn't able to pull enough of a vacuum to open the check valve in the primer bulb. So I tried putting the primer bulb between the fuel pump and carb. So far it's running great. If this solves my problem of long crank times after the mower has been sitting with a dry carb and fuel lines I'll a happy camper.

I believe what was suggested was something like the following.

i don't know if my friend followed up on the kohler that would only start if you pressured the fuel tank by blowing into it.
