Are the overhead valves on a 17Hp Kohler Pro CV490S adjustable?

If I not mistaken they all have hydraulic lifters in which case they are self adjusting hydraulically and requires no adjustment by the tech. Note: they basically same as the ones that automobile uses and can suffer the same failures.

Hi Dennis

If it sounds like the valves are rattling on start up, the engine may require an oil change. In my experience as a former John Deere tech, when the CV13's and CV15's rattled on start up, it usually meant they were very low on oil, or the oil was breaking down and wasn't pressuring up the hydraulic lifters properly. Change the oil on these engines and the rattle stopped. Don't know about the larger V-twins, but if the lifter system is the same, it would stand to reason you'd experience the same symptoms. All the best,

Sky
