I like the idea of just cutting a hole for the valve. Thanks for that tip.

Starfire One wrote:Yelp bgsengine those things do need checking and replaced if necessary. I just work on too many to remember the common sense things I do automatically so I do forget to mention those checks at times. Yes crank seal are commonly replaced items along with fuel lines. Intake boots not so much. New spark plug usually gets installed due aluminum coating of the old one.

These are basics of any rebuild that you check everything and replace the worn items as you do the rebuild. On straight gassed 2 cycles most of the damage is contained in the PNC so the other items are usually good. It when you don't know the cause is when you do things out caution and experience. It better to be over cautious then not.

Jerkputter, if you can I would recommend the modding to a decomp setup when available as long as you get a cylinder cover to match. Just note not all saws came with them or have them available later. Many of us older operators need all the help we can get on these larger saws when it comes to starting one. Actually anything above 42cc should have one. Boy some of old saws are hard to crank even using some tricks I have learned over the years.

Again great information. THANKS

He cannot make up his mind on where to purchase the parts. The local Stihl dealer quoted $275 for just the cylinder and piston. Any suggestions on where to buy that would be cheaper that that. Thanks

See post #9 of this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3046#p21784 just do a search on amazon by part number , if you want it fixed cheap... but if you want it all original then he gonna have to spring for the stihl dealer parts.

IMHO an 039 is not worth spending that kind of money on. It is the cheaper clamshell design, basically a heavy boat anchor. For the same coin he could likely find a good used 036 that is a far stouter saw with more power.

If the chainsaw was not any good I sort of doubt it would have held up for 20 plus years. It has been used a lot over those years by the way . Why not fix it and save some money. I think it is worth is if he can find the parts for a good price.

I am not suggesting that it was not any good, the 039 served very well. I'm just saying it is time to walk away and invest in something better.

He has got a newer model. He just wants this one for a backup. I am sure someone has repaired one of these for around $100

Sure you can if you are not charging for labor. Here if I just went with the $51 PNC (sold at cost which I don't normally do) and and an hour's labor ($45) it is still $100 plus with taxes. And I still got to the add the other parts and materials. I not going to spend a couple hours and charge anything less. It is why I am not rebuilding the 029 here as I would never get my money for the rebuild.

Anyway any major repair is not going to be cheap. This why most customers just opt for a new saw but you not going to any that around $100 that has 4.4 BHP rating. This saw was once close $500 new depending which dealer sold it.
