replacing motor, suggestions?

Postby dart451 » Mon May 27, 2019 10:27 am

I believe this briggs 252707-0645-01 is on it's last legs...could someone please advise me how I would go about replacing the engine with a new engine? Do I just measure the shaft and find a new equivalent hp rating? Thanks.

Youu also need to know the charging system output. Does it have a voltage regulator or just two wires with bullet connectors? Also, your type number is incomplete, there should be four digits.

Dart you are missing a digit in the type number. Should be 4 digits not three.

As for replacement since most are now OHV engine yes it is basically measuring crankshaft and matching HP or sightly higher but note that some will have a different oil pan which can cause mounting PTO end components problems. And sometimes even need to cut a crankshaft to shorten it. In all it can be a challenge when retro fitting an engine especially when there is no direct replacement.

And said Roy said a matching charging system if used.

One more question...what do you guys usually charge for a complete rebuild on an older engine like this?, (if that's what the customer wants).

Just better off replacing the engine as costs are the same if not more to rebuild plus with a new engine they get a long warranty.

BTW after you post the correct type number I got a direct replacement engine to use Briggs Power Portal; 217907-3025-G5. EDIT: Checking with my distributor, they say use 21R707-0047-G1

Creankshaft 1" diameter, 3.165 length , threaded hole 7/16-20 UNF

your old engine is - really old. Most of the modern engines are overhead valve. Measure the replacement engine to ensure clearance with hoods or structures. Consider arrangements with muffler piping as this may not transfer to the replacement engine.

If you are handy, visit some of the graveyards behind repair shops. There are many serviceable engines sitting in worn out tractors. The 31 cid engines are common and would give you something to judge fit.
