Briggs Flywheel Ringear

I was called about a starter not working properly. Cranking it made a terrible noise removed the air shroud and the plastic ring gear was chewed up all the way around. I removed the flywheel and the ring gear is riveted ti the flywheel. Question is how hard are these to replace and what do I watch out for? Any suggestions would be most greatful.

Damaged gear on starter is fairly common. Is the flywheel ring gear actually damaged.Is it steel or aluminum? If steel then the plastic gear on the starter was wrong. Plastic starter gear on aluminum ring gear and steel on steel. Tooth count is even different. What are the engine numbers?

I don't think the plastic ring gears were replaceable when ring gears were available.

It sounds like someone installed a starter with a 14 tooth steel gear instead of the 16 tooth plastic gear. The 16 tooth starter pinion gear is used on the plastic and aluminum ring gears and 14 tooth starter steel pinion is use only with steel ring gear.

696537 is the common repair kit for the 28" Intek singles if that is what you mean. I take a zip wheel and cut the rivet through the gear near the flywheel and drive them out. Comes with the bolts that replace the rivets.

I wish posters could understand that without the equipment info that those that try to help can only guess at what is available. So many forums that this is do on no wonder that ones asking for info and help ends up getting the wrong info.

I realize that I misread the first post. Looks like it was the ring that was damaged. I've never actually seen an engine with the plastic ring gear.

Yep MY ESP has been out for awhile along the separator tube. I haven't found a good separator tube in years.

Sorry for not giving enough info. The engine is a BS 407777 0184 E1 and the part # for the ring gear is 499612. Seems like most vendors they are on back-order. Even the Briggs website said they were out. Anyway Sears didn't say they were backordered. So I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That's a vtwin? And it had plastic ring gear.
