Honda Mower

Postby lefty » Sat Mar 28, 2020 7:54 pm

I got this Machine in from my neighbor. It has been sitting for a number of years and he wanted to get it going.

Model:HRX217TDA
Serial: MAGA-1170621

Everything went well with it but I have a problem I can't seem to figure out. The throttle slips back a bit. I can push it back up to full throttle but it just slips back every time. There's a nut there that holds the pivot point for both the throttle and gear selector but it's as tight as I want to turn it and it doesn't seem to help.

You have probably seen a picture of the mechanism but if not, here it is:

I see a spring (2) and a seat (3). Perhaps the spring is weak or broken.

Ah, so that spring is providing friction against the spring on the throttle at the engine end of the cable? Am I understanding that correctly?

No, that is at the throttle control lever end on the handlebar. I would think that's where the friction to hold the throttle open would occur.

Right. What I meant, if I was understanding, was there's tension pulling the cable down from the bottom and the spring on the control lever fights that with friction against the spring and seat at the top? Maybe I'm just not getting it. I'll know better when I take it apart I'm sure.

I'm curious what you find when you get the control apart. Good luck!

I'm guessing a broken spring or seat.

Thanks. I'm picturing springs and parts flying everywhere and me crawling around on my hands and knees for the next 1/2 hour. I'll let you know how it goes.

Wrap a rag around it and work blind, or possibly a bread wrapper. It might save you a hunt.
