Heavy duty starter switch or solenoid

Postby dennis » Sat Aug 01, 2020 6:44 pm

Need some advice. Thinking of putting a 10-10.5 HP electric start engine on a log splitter. I can use a solenoid and a light duty switch, or skip the solenoid and just use a heavy duty starter switch from battery to starter. The length of the heavy starter cables is not really an issue here. Any suggestions, pros, cons??

Personally I would use the solenoid and a 10 amp monetary switch. Reason behind this is the solenoids are cheaper to replace later as the contacts of any heavy switch will burn leading to failure. It is the same with the solenoid but the solenoid cheaper and easier to replace.

Thanks, KE4AVB. That makes sense. Those heavy-duty starter switches are spendy, and the solenoid, and momentary switch, together are cheaper.

I prefer the heavy duty starter switches from TSC...waterproof and bullet proof. I usually end up replacing the solenoid every year on my tractors. A good switch is no more expensive than a solenoid with fewer connections to go bad.
