917.273811 Electric Problem

Postby KE4AVB » Wed Sep 02, 2020 2:08 pm

Gentle here is good mind problem.

Craftsman 917.373.811 no starter. Starter solenoid not even clicking but fuel solenoid operating normally.

No voltage at starter solenoid trigger tab. No voltage at "S" terminal at ignition switch. Voltage at "B terminal of ignition except in start position. Fuel solenoid doesn't drop out in start position.

Note: Both safeties are good working order.

What did I find to be the problem?

Puzzled how you got voltage on A1 in start if none on B at start.

That one doesn't make any sense to me either but how things appeared on this end. I mean the DVMM definitely showed zero volts on B in start position.

You say: Voltage at "B terminal of ignition except in start position.

Appears maybe two electrical issues.
Should be a voltage at B at all times. Bad fuse or open connection, BUT also
AND maybe a cross connection in the wire loom due to rat chewing on wires resulting in a stray cross connect voltage getting to the fuel solenoid from a source other than from B terminal ign switched.

Pull ign switch plug off the switch and check the electrical plug terminals for voltage backfeed source maybe.????

What did ya find? :?:

Yes I did find it. No there was no mice damage or feedback voltage.

It was the terminal from the battery at the starter solenoid that the B+ power fed through the fuse and then on to the ignition switch. Corrosion inside the terminal and no it wasn't from battery acid either. Cut it off cable until clean metal and install a new cable lug with anti-oxidate paste using a hydraulic crimper.

A heck a lot easier to fix than replacing that fuel tank bushing under the tank and above the transaxle.

How to explain power to a1 for carb solenoid?
