No they are no joke as they are currently making their way into vehicle brake systems.

Volvo is one vehicle OEM. Bendix and Girling brakes systems. Manhole covers and fire plugs are another place they are used. They are used where ever they don't civilians monkeying with things.

The 90 chevy Lumina had a big bolt on the front caliper that was torx. I broke a few bits getting those loose.

If that Torx bit was anything like my 2000 Chevy Silverado S1500 then it was a T-55. I had to buy one to do all four calipers here. Then the RR caliper froze up and I was left sitting here for a week while one was shipped in. I really need a spare vehicle.

I had a set that went up to T-50 and it was just my luck the T-55 was the next size that I didn't have on hand. That T-55 is now just sitting in the tool box until the next brake job.

I thought you were going to mention a German car as they are know for that kind of thing.

What kind of creep would mess with a fire hydrant? Anyway, it will only be a matter of time when you can buy them at Harbor Freight for $5. Just like the security Torx, Screws with the 2 holes etc. Then they will try to find an other vandalism deterrent. The cycle keeps going.

Back when I was in university residence one of the students did steal a manhole cover. They brought it to the basement stairwell. In the middle of the night someone would raise it on edge and spin it. As it wound down the noise would reverberate up the 4 levels. My thought then was the danger if the cover was from the middle of a roadway. One student also had a stolen big warning of electrical shock sign.
