Old TroyBilt Tiller Carb

Postby lefty » Sun Mar 14, 2021 7:34 pm

I have this old machine here.

Briggs: 130292-1664-01
Code: 83012607

I've posted about this machine a few years back so it may ring a bell

Having fuel issues and decided to this time, just get a new carb. It's a tank-mounted carb. There is a part on the diagram, 163A which shows as an air cleaner gasket. It's actually a piece of plastic that is notched and fits onto the intake of the carb and makes a nice seat for the air filter. The new carb doesn't come with this part and I'm trying to figure out how to remove it, without breaking, but I can't seem to see a way except brute force, which would likely break it. It spins a certain about and I would expect some notches to slide it off but can't seem to figure it out. Any ideas?

Thanks.

It will flex enough to separate from the carburetor.

New ones are fairly soft rubber, they easily flex enough to slip on and off.. Old ones can harden (sometimes rock hard) however, if you clean your carb somewhat and then soak the gasket and carb in hot (boiling hot) water for a while (20 minutes, half hour or until water temp is still hot, but not so hot as to burn you) and then carefully bend out the bottom tangs (that clip it to the carb body) it will hopefully be softened enough to get it off, and installed on new carb, without damaging the gasket.. I believe replacements are still available , but maybe can find new old stock.. I think gasket is shown in a separate illustration on some models (not all models) under air cleaner group.. or possibly on an old-time parts catalog... it's hard to find the part numbers for some things like that...

The PN for the gasket was 270488 superseded to 271755. It is now NLA new but I did find a few listed using Google.

The following image is for just verification of the part number is the correct one.

That looks like it. Thank you all. I'll soak it for a bit and see if I can't salvage it.

lefty,
Welcome to my world! Working on engines typically 40-50 years old I run into this a lot of times where these gaskets are as hard as a rock. Yes, it is removeable and you have already been given good advice on how to soften them and remove them. I use a tiny flat blade screwdriver and (gently) pry it off on one corner, then another, while pushing it sideways toward the corners I am trying to pry off. If you break it, all is not lost as you can still get them on eBay. If you remove the gasket w/o damaging/cracking it, (and have the time) a little trick I use to soften it up is to soak it in brake fluid for a few days. It will make it pliable and flexible again. I have "restored" many this way.

That worked like a charm. Thanks.

If I could, I have another question. I had posted regarding this machine a while back. We had all struggled with trying to identify the machine (especially me). I read some stuff recently stating that prior to a certain date, 1990 if I remember correctly, the machines did not have model numbers. You would identify them by the model name and serial number. Well, it's a pony and I'm 99% sure the serial is S1225C1. I'm trying to look it up by that for parts but can't seem to nail it down. I'm hoping this info is helpful to someone more experienced than me. It's leaking out of the left side of the gearbox in the rear. I think it's a gasket. Also, I'd like to get a reverse belt for it. The original is missing.

Thanks.
