Ferris 1000Z

I have this machine here with some problems but before I even start on it, I need some basic help. I'm having trouble locating the model tag. I think it may be gone. I'm told it was purchased used around 2001 used.

The engine tag says FH641VB01104 and FH641V-BS13. Kawasaki. I'm not sure if that helps.

First things first...I need to be able to push it around. Without the model number, I'm having trouble finding a manual and figuring out how to do that. I need to disengage the hydro drive so I can push it. There's a couple of bolts with holes in them on the hydro drives. I'm told by the owner that he thinks you just turn those but I don't like doing anything I'm not sure of. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I haven't worked on one these. But ea 1000Z I pull uses the same hydro setup. On each pump is a release screw with a side through hole you can rotate them to bypass the pump.

Now for the IPl there is three different versions of each deck size. If you can find the model of the deck it will help some narrowing each of the three versions. Otherwords three versions each of the 48", 52", and 61" decks. but I think I got it down to three models as the other ipl indicate a Kohler engine.

5901005 52" cut
5901006 61" cut

Thank you. Looks like it's a 48". I can't locate any markings on the deck but I measured it.

If anyone has ever worked on one of these kawasaki engines, I'm looking to adjust the rpm. The manual says 3600 and I'm running about 3200 right now. The owner had cracked into her and fouled things up a bit. I removed the throttle plate to static set the governor because they had had at that as well. The screws for the throttle assembly are slotted and there may be a tang to bend as well but I'm trying to get at the right way if anyone has suggestions. I reset the governor and tried to get the throttle plate back where the witness marks were but I've obviously missed the mark a bit...better low than high but I'd like to get back to spec.

Thanks.

Perfect. Thank you. The one I have is a little different as both mounting screws for the throttle control panel are slotted but I think I get the idea. Moving the panel up will put more tension on the governor spring and raise the RPM. Thanks again.

I actually sent it back after cleaning carb. Ran fine for a few weeks but is now exhibiting a different problem. Owner reports that it starts and runs fine until it is shut down. When hot, it won't start. Just cranks. Once it cools down, it starts again. Coils are new, replaced by the owner. Could this be a valve adjustment issue?

Thanks.

After doing some reading of similar problems, head gasket seems to be a suggestion. This is a v-twin. I'll be doing diagnostics on the machine later today...when the sun is less angry. If in fact, a head gasket can cause this problem, I'd like to understand the mechanics behind that, if anyone has time to explain.

Thanks

I thought I was going to be getting to it today, but I will answer that question tomorrow. He said he set them to .020.
