Sparkplug hit valve

Postby 38racing » Fri May 27, 2022 7:23 pm

friend's neighbour put ohv in a 2011 quantum flat. can see mark on the valve. haven't looked close enough to see whether it is intake or exhaust. won't fire on CCleaner but I haven't verified spark. someelse did compression and said 60 . not a priority fix but wonder what experience can offer. just bent valve or tappet and cam damage?

Well I would do a leak down test to see if the problem is apparent by one of the valves leaking at TDC. I only had a couple engines here with long plugs installed were short one are called for. One if I remember put a hole thru the piston.

I initially thought piston because I checked an 89 that I thought was an early quantum and plug lined up with piston. turns out it was an 11 series. this guy's is a 2011 and and a 12 series and plug lines up with a valve.

Bet you would find a sheared crank gear key, that or composite camshaft gear spun on the cam. Had one of those once, on teardown the composite gear fell right off the cam shaft when I went to remove the cam.

the engine is a 2001. I've got a 91 quantum that shows a different part number for the cam. I wonder if I pull it what differences I'll find.

Looks like cam gear spun as I can also see a crack on it's hub. I can get used hub from ebay from USA for $65 cdn or new for $140.
Still wondering if I should pull one from 91 engine just to see if it is same size, just not composite

I pulled the cam from the 91. on first inspection the only difference that I can see is the colour of the plastic. all dimensions appear to be the same.
